Patient Portals: Logging on to Better Health

why you should use online access to your family medical information

Patient portals are becoming increasingly popular throughout the healthcare industry. A patient portal is a secure online website that gives you convenient, 24-hour access to your personal health information from any web-enabled device.
Your health information is private, secure, and protected. All patient portals have privacy and security safeguards in place to protect your health information. They are hosted on a secure connection and accessed via an encrypted, password-protected logon. Electronic health records also have an “audit trail” feature that keeps a record of who accessed your information, what changes were made, and when.

Power to the Patient

Research shows that when patients can access their own health data, they gain ownership of their wellness and are better prepared to interact with their providers about their care. Some patients choose to allow family members to access their health information so they can help take care of them more easily. This is a useful tool as our society ages and children become involved in the healthcare decisions of their parents. Also, patient portals offer self-service options that can eliminate phone tag with your doctor and sometimes even save a trip to the doctor’s office. This leads to not only efficiency for the patient and doctor, but also the opportunity to reduce healthcare bills for the patient.

Online Portal Features

The features of patient portals may vary, but typically you can securely view and print portions of your medical record, including the following:

  • Recent doctor visits.
  • Discharge summaries.
  • Medications.
  • Immunizations.
  • Allergies.
  • Most lab results.

You can view and print these records anytime and from anywhere you have web access.
